Velvet Durags

Velvet durags have gained in popularity with the new resurgence of the durag.  Whereas the classic durag was normally made from a satin mix, velvets incorporated velvet materials on the outside of the durag and have satin lining the interior.

The velvet gives these durags a unique luxurious look, in addition keeping your head warmer in the colder months.

What's the Difference Between Velvet and Velour?

Velvet and velour typically get used interchangeably by people outside of the fashion industry, but there are big differences between them:

VELVET:

Velvet is woven, cut and crushed.  It is made from either polyester, rayon, or silk.  However, most velvet fabric has a blend of these three.  Velvet has a longer pile than velvet.

Velvet is woven, cut, crushed; made primarily from polyester, rayon and silk as well as blends of the three; more luxurious. Velvet pile is a bit longer than velour or velveteen with the desired effect of a standing pile.

VELOUR:

Velour is dense, plush, and knit.  It is usually made of a cotton-blend and known to be stretchy.

4 WAY YOU CAN FEEL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN VELVET AND VELOUR

  1. Velvet is shiner than velour
  2. Velvet is not stretchy, velour is.
  3. Velvet is a thicker fabric than velour
  4. Velvet looks more expensive and luxurious than velour.

Are Velvet Durags Good for Waves?

In our popular blog post "How Do Durags Make Waves" we mentioned that durags do not make waves.  Durags are used to protect your hair while you sleep and lay your hair flat while it is growing.

That being said velvet durags are great for waves.  While the outside is made from velvet, the inside of the durag is made from satin.  Velvets provide better compression than traditional silky durags, which can create better-looking waves.

Silk vs Velvet Durag

Traditionally durags were made from satin.  Satin is a breathable weave that generally has a dull back and a glossy surface.

While satin is a great material, it can be easily damaged if not taken proper care.

Velvet durags are more durable than satin durags.  They often look better as well because of the velvet exterior.  Satin is still lined on the inside of a velvet durag, making it perfect for your hair!

  • The strings should still be at the back of your head, now pull them back in front.  When you cross them, make sure it is at the center of your head.  Then once again pull them to the back of your head.
  • Flatten out the ties if you want them to lay flat.
  • Do not pull the ties too tight of you will get a headache.
